Propano is a large country estate that was donated in 1525 by the Marquis of Saluzzo to the Carthusian friars of Monbracco, who made it their residence. Following a careful restoration of some of the buildings a part of the property has been transformed into an enchanting hotel, surrounded by fields and the mountains of Monviso.
Hotel Antico Podere Propano has the atmosphere of a large private country house yet is situated not far from the centre of Saluzzo. The reception, the breakfast room and the restaurant overlook the large internal courtyard that can be used for open air banquets. The spacious rooms, all stylishly furnished, are equipped with air conditioning, satellite Tv, internet connection and minibar. Six suites have been created in the old residential wing and one has facilities for the disabled.
Saluzzo, capital of the ancient marquisate, is one of the most enchanting towns in Piedmont. The old part of the town with the XVth century Civic Tower , the “Castiglia” (the marquis of Saluzzo's ancient castle), the church of San Giovanni , “Casa Cavassa” an elegant XVth century nobleman's house and the museum dedicated to the author Silvio Pellico. Not far from Saluzzo there is the abbey at Staffarda, the “Castello della Manta” (with the fresco “Fontana della Giovinezza”) and the Palace of Racconigi which was the summer residence of the Italian royal family Savoia until 1946. For interesting day trips: the source of the Po river at the foot of Monviso; Alba (47 km) and the Langa wine area; the city of Turin (55 km) and the ski area of Sestriere (86 km), both sites for the 2006 Winter Olympics.
